Alex squinted into the darkness behind them. He strained his eyes trying to catch the slightest hint of movement.
Then he saw it. The ground seemed to be moving towards them again.
"The cockroaches are coming back!" Alex yelled as he backed toward the others.
"I told you they aren't cockroaches." Hudson said.
"Who cares what they are. We need to set the ground on fire again." Emma said.
"We can't do that because Nigel had the lighter, and that tanglewood tree thing got him. And i dropped the last torch in the mud." Alex said.
"Light. Does anyone have a flashlight?" Hudson asked.
"Not since the last time you asked." Alex shot back.
"I mean anything that has light. Your phones, iPods, keychains, anything?" Hudson continued.
"My phone is dead."
"Mine only has twenty percent battery."
"If they work, set the brightness to maximum and point them at the roaches." Hudson said.
"I thought you said they weren't roaches." Alex said.
"They aren't! Would you just stop arguing! I'm starting to freak out. You know I hate these things." Hudson's voice cracked.
The friends pointed anything with light into the darkness; as they slowly backed away from the oncoming tide of insect-like monsters.
The small amount of light seemed to be keeping the creatures at bay.
It wasn't the heat of the fire that had driven them away before; it was the light. Hudson thought.
It was only then that he realized the others had backed further from him. He was standing nearly alone. He just had time to think about this before his phone died.
The giant cockroach-like insects surged toward him.
