The Escape

The Escape

The first story started with the end.

Thursday, May 22, 2014

The door shut behind Nigel. Emma sighed. She trudged to her room, he wouldn't be home for a while. She clicked the door shut. She grabbed a floppy, falling apart binder from the floor and flopped down on her bed. She flipped through the pictures she had taken last night when she had sneaked out. What were those things? They were the things guarding the building, she was sure of it, but the pictures were so dark and blurry that she couldn't be sure what the dark shapes were. If only I could have gotten to that light switch, Emma thought. She stared out her window. There was only an expense of dry grass and rock. In some areas of the land scape, there were bushes and trees. It was already dark outside. Not wanting to stare at the dismal landscape, she closed the curtains. Emma looked at Nigels empty bed across the room. She turned her mind to other problems, why was Mom going away? She hadn't told her. Maybe the best way is to ask. She stood up and opened her door and walked out to Mom. "Mom, why are you leaving?" Mrs. Eades stared at her a moment, her blue eyes met Emma's brown ones. She hesitated to answer, but finally, she spoke.
"Emma, I'm sure you have ideas about what your brother is doing."
     "Yes ma'am"
"He should come home tonight, but, if he tries to escape and makes it, just make sure you get to the force field."
    "Force field?"
"If you can get as far as that tall hill (she then pointed out the window) you'll be under the force field."
"You mean to go with him?"
"If it means you can leave this place."
"But, Mom, what about you, we can't leave you behind."
"Call me, I'll find a way to avoid coming back and meet you guys in Dawsonville nearby"
"I've never heard of that place!"
"Just walk and find a road, you'll see a sign eventually" Emma was silent. She knew Nigel and the others had been trying to escape, but somehow, she never pictured it actually happening. The idea scared her. She walked back to her room. She pulled her sketching things from her drawer. She wasn't good at sketching, but she tried anyway. Then, she thought if I might be leaving, I might want to pack a few things. She pulled a large bag with a wide shoulder strap from the closet. She put some money, her phone and charger, a book and her iPad in the bag. She went around her room, adding things. She got a snack or two as well. Then, she sat down to sketch.

Emma absentmindedly doodled in her note book. She picked a red pencil put of the pack of colored pencils sticking out from her bag. She wished she could go outside sometime, but they had warned her about the tangle wood trees. She knew Nigel and his friends were trying to escape. She would wondered if she could to come with them. Emma still remembered last night. Why had she snuck out? She was just glad her Mom hadn't found out. She got up, her favorite show was on, so she walked in the living room to watch it, pencils abandoned on the floor.
It was just then that Ms. Eades herself walked in to the room.
"Now Emma, you know the rules, no wandering outside, just stay here until Nigel and the others return, they should be home soon." She retrieved her bag from the kitchen, then headed towards the front door of the apartment.

Ms. Eades  patted Emma's head. "Alright Emma, I'm leaving now. You're sure you'll be alright until your brother gets home?"
"Yeah, I guess so." Emma answered not paying attention because she was watching icarly.
"Remember not to stay up past 9:00 and I'll be home sometime tomorrow."
        "Okay now leave!" Emma said.
        "Love you honey!"
"Go-wa" Her mom finally closed the door.  Emma listened to her mom's car drive by. I can be a bad girl and stay up late, but then Nigel will get home early, because he's not a popular kid, and then tell on me. She looked at the TV clock. It was 8:12. I'll just go ahead and go to bed. Emma ran up the stairs and jumped on her bed. She turned on her phone so she can face time her mom.
"Look mom I already went to bed like a mature, smart, and good little girl."
        "OK bye."
"Uh!" I guess she doesn't have time for her daughter. Emma flipped her pillow and closed her eyes.

Emma sat up in her bed. She ran into Nigel's bedroom. Why wasn't he here yet? He usually comes home a lot earlier than he said he would. Oh! He's probably playing a trick on her.            "You're not scaring me Nigel! So just come out from wherever your hiding before you fall asleep there."    Nigel?! Oh no!" " OWW!" Why would you have a lego on the floor if you don't even play with them?" Emma picked it up. It had a note! Meet me were the monsters are.

Emma slid open the door. Wondering what she was doing, she sneaked outside into the hall. She knew the place was guarded by the monsters, though the others tried to keep it from her. Though she was the youngest, she knew what she was doing. They were supposed to be guests, but she knew it was meant to be a prison. They were allowed to roam the place, but the thick concrete walls and steel doors barring them from outside reminded them of what this place really was. She was irritated with the others for running off. Where were they? Were they trying to concoct another escape plan? They said they would be back by now. She heard familiar voices behind a door. Silently, she pushed it open and stood in the shadows behind the group.
Kristen, Nigel, Hudson, and Alex were trying to escape the monsters when Emma came up. "Emma what  are you doing here? You're suppose to be in bed asleep!" scolded Nigel.
"Well," said Emma,"You said you were just going to hang out with your friends or something, and you'll be home at 10:00 pm and it's 10:37 and you ain't even home yet!"
Nigel screamed "I said or SOMETHING! What are even doing here anyway?"
   "I-" started Emma.
"Guys! Break up the fight! The most important thing here is to find a way to escape." said Kristen.
Alex saw a cave about 1 mile away from them. "Perfect." he said.
